Edinburgh Castle
At the top of the Royal Mile visit Edinburgh Castle, the most famous of Scotland’s castles. View the Honours of Scotland exhibition, telling the story of the Scottish Crown Jewels and the historic Stone of Destiny on which previous Scottish Monarchs were crowned. The Castle also houses the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O’Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

The Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Mile
The largest, longest and finest street for Buildings and Number of Inhabitants, not only in Britain, but also in the World…. (Daniel Defoe, 1723). Probably Edinburgh’s oldest street, The Royal Mile connects Edinburgh Castle with the Palace of Holyrood House. Travelling to Edinburgh
Car/Rail
New Cumnock to Edinburgh takes approximately two hours. An alternative, to travelling all the way by train, would be to travel by car to one of the railway stations on the outskirts of Edinburgh, (i.e. West Calder or Curriehill) park your car, free of charge, step on the hourly train into Edinburgh Waverley station and within 30 or 20 minutes (depending on the station used) you will be in the centre of the city and spared any parking problems.
Rail Timetables
Travelling by train from New Cumnock to Edinburgh www.firstscotrail.co.uk takes approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes. You must change stations at Glasgow Central to Queen Street station. (Please click on above for timetables)
By Bus
If however you are anxious about driving into Edinburgh city centre - alternatively – you could street park your car free of charge before entering the restricted parking zone, step onto the bus, buy a day ticket after 9.30 am to the centre, or elsewhere and return, all for £2.00 adult and £1.00 child. |
